Builders in Radlett: How JMB Design & Build Is Transforming Homes Across the Village

If you're searching for builders in Radlett, you're probably at the point where your home no longer works the way you need it to. Maybe the kitchen is too small for the way your family actually lives, maybe you've outgrown the bedrooms, or maybe you've bought a dated property on a generous plot and can see exactly what it could become. Whatever the starting point, this guide covers what to expect from a Radlett building project, what it typically costs, and how we've delivered some of our most ambitious work right here in the village.

JMB Design & Build is an award-winning construction company based in Potters Bar, ten minutes from Radlett. We've been building across Hertfordshire for over 25 years, and Radlett has become one of the areas where we do our best work.

Why Radlett homes are worth investing in

Radlett is one of Hertfordshire's most desirable places to live, and for good reason: Thameslink trains into St Pancras in around 25 minutes, excellent schools, and a village feel surrounded by green belt. That combination keeps property values strong, which is why so many Radlett homeowners choose to improve rather than move.

The village's housing stock also lends itself to transformation. Many Radlett properties sit on generous plots, particularly the 1930s and post-war houses and bungalows along roads like Craigweil Avenue and Park Road. That space gives you options: a rear extension to open up the ground floor, a loft conversion to add bedrooms, or in some cases a complete rebuild that makes far better use of the land.

As a local builder, we also understand the practical side. Hertsmere Borough Council handles planning for Radlett, parts of the village fall within conservation areas, and green belt boundaries affect what's possible on some plots. We've worked through all of it, and our in-house design and planning team manages the process from the first drawing to sign-off.

Our recent projects in Radlett

The best way to judge a builder is by their work. Here are three projects that show the range of what we deliver in Radlett.

Craigweil Avenue: two state-of-the-art homes from one dated plot

This is one of the projects we're proudest of. The site was a tired property on a large plot, and our client could see it had far more potential than a single dated house. Working with our design team, the plot became two beautiful, near-identical homes: 1a Craigweil Avenue, a complete new build constructed from the ground up, and 1 Craigweil Avenue, a full refurbishment of the existing bungalow, finished to match its new neighbour so closely that you'd struggle to tell them apart.

Inside 1a, every detail was designed around modern living: an open-plan kitchen and living space with a marble waterfall island, Crittall doors, LED coving and a bespoke media wall; bedrooms with built-in wardrobes and electric blinds; a spa-like bathroom finished in onyx-effect marble with brushed copper brassware; and a dedicated utility room. Outside, solar panels and an air source heat pump keep running costs low and the home future-proofed.

Park Road: a full renovation and rear extension

Park Road shows what's possible when you keep the house you love but rebuild the way it works. This project combined a full house renovation with internal structural alterations and a rear extension, delivered as one integrated build.

The extension opened up the ground floor into a bright, open-plan living area, the internal reconfiguration improved the flow between rooms, and the renovation lifted every room in the house to a high-specification finish. It's a great example of the "improve, don't move" approach that works so well in Radlett.

1 Craigweil Avenue: the bungalow refurbishment

The sister project to 1a, this was a complete refurbishment of the original bungalow on the plot. It proves a point we make often: a dated property isn't a problem, it's an opportunity. With the right design, an existing structure can be transformed to the same standard as a brand new build, often with less disruption and a shorter programme. A full project page is coming soon.

What we build in Radlett

Every project is bespoke, but the work we're most often asked for in Radlett falls into five areas.

New build homes. From a single bespoke home to plot redevelopments like Craigweil Avenue, we handle everything from groundworks and structure through to landscaping and final finish.

House extensions. Single and double-storey rear extensions, side returns and wraparounds, most commonly to create the open-plan kitchen and living space that modern family life revolves around.

Loft conversions. Dormer and hip-to-gable conversions that add a bedroom, bathroom or home office without touching your garden or footprint.

Home renovations. Full refurbishments that modernise layouts, upgrade kitchens and bathrooms, and bring older properties up to today's standards of comfort and energy efficiency.

Garage conversions. Turning unused garage space into a home office, gym, annex or extra living room.

What does a building project in Radlett cost?

Every home is different, so the only accurate figure is a quote based on your property and your brief. That said, homeowners understandably want a sense of scale before they pick up the phone, so here are indicative ranges based on the projects we deliver across Hertfordshire.

Loft conversions typically fall between £45,000 and £90,000 or more depending on the type of conversion and the finish. Single-storey extensions usually range from £60,000 to £150,000 or more, with the kitchen specification making the biggest difference. Full house renovations typically start from around £20,000 for a single room upgrade and scale with the scope. New builds are priced individually because plot, size and specification vary so widely.

These are guide figures only. Once we've visited your property we'll give you a detailed, itemised quote, and if anything unexpected comes up during the build, you'll always know the cost before the work is carried out.

Frequently asked questions about building in Radlett

Do I need planning permission for an extension in Radlett?

Many single-storey rear extensions fall under permitted development, but larger extensions, anything in a conservation area, and most loft conversions with dormers will need a planning application to Hertsmere Borough Council. We handle the application as part of the design process.

How long does a house extension take?

A typical single-storey extension takes 12 to 16 weeks on site once planning is approved. Larger, multi-storey projects and full renovations take longer, and we'll give you a realistic programme before work starts.

Can I live in the house during the work?

In most cases, yes. Many of our Radlett clients stay in the property throughout, and we plan the build to keep disruption to a minimum.

Do you work outside Radlett?

Yes. We're based in Potters Bar and work across Hertfordshire, including St Albans, Bushey, Shenley, Letchmore Heath and Kings Langley, as well as North London and Essex.
